What is tennis elbow?

[ Sport Injury Exercise ]

What is tennis elbow?
Tendonitis of the elbow is often referred to as tennis elbow due to its common occurrence in tennis players, but in fact any sport or activity that requires gripping can cause this problem. A more precise definition of Tennis elbow is that it is an inflammation of several structures of the elbow. These include muscles, tendons, bursa, periosteum, and epicondyle (bony projections on the outside and inside of the elbow, where muscles of the forearm attach to the bone of the upper arm). This condition is also called epicondylitis, lateral epicondylitis, medial epicondylitis, or golfer's elbow, where pain is present at the inside epicondyle. Such pain is usually more noticeable during or after stressful use of the arm. In sever cases, lifting and grasping even light things may be very painful.

PRINCIPLE OF INJURY PREVENTION

PRINCIPLE OF INJURY PREVENTION

1. WARMING UP
Warming up and preparing specific muscles and the body for the extra stress of vigorous activities. Warming up is to achieve better result in training or performance. It is also to avoid damage to the muscle, tissues or body due to long period of physical activities.

2. COOLING DOWN
Gradually lower the physiological function of the body after exercise to avoid negative and physiological effects. This can slow down the physiological function that consists of:
 Breathing exercise
 Light stretching
 Enhance recovery
 Reduce the accumulation of lactic acid

ANKLE REHABILITATION

ANKLE REHABILITATION

DEFINITION
The lateral inversion sprain is one of the most common injuries and one of the most neglected. A sprain is the partial or complete disruption of a ligament or ligaments when the ankle joint exceeds its normal range of motion.
The lateral side of the ankle is composed of the three major ligament structures and their associated capsule: 1. Anterior Talofibular: 2. Calcaneofibular: and 3. Posterior Talofibular ligament. The individual ligaments provide lateral stability depending upon the position of the foot. Thus the position of the foot and amount of intrinsic or extrinsic force applied determine which of the ligaments will be injured.

RECURRENT ANKLE SPRAINS
People who chronically sprain their ankles may have some inherent factors that predispose them to re-injury. Some obvious reasons may include weakness or muscle imbalance, residual ligamentous instability, lack of an effective proprioceptive feedback system, etc.

Sports Massage (SM)

Introduction

Sports Massage (SM) is a massage technique that utilizes a system of movements including gliding, compressing, stretching, and other innovations. Sports massage primarily focuses on the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of the body's soft tissues. It also known for improving training, injury prevention, enhanced self-awareness and performance and SM also improves blood circulation, which allows athletes to train more efficaciously. Additionally, SM is a natural antioxidant as it helps to remove waste products and refurbishes tissues with essential nutrients in help in healing. By using SM, deep tissue damage and imbalances can be detected as early as and possibly corrected before an injury become worse. Sports massage is popularly use prior to sporting events as it can stimulate circulation, relieve stress and assist an athlete to perform in peak physical condition.

Definition of Lactate Threshold

http://www.drlenkravitz.com/Media/LTslide.gif
Lactic Threshold is a term used to loosely describe the point at which it begins to hurt more than it should. Think of it as the transition from comfortably hard to hardly comfortable. Loads of people have loads of different interpretations of what it is and what it should be called but for the sake of this factsheet we will call it your lactic threshold and describe it as the point at which your lactic acid production overcomes your body's ability to flush it away".
What is the Lactate Threshold?

Ø Purpose:
PPE is not to disqualify or exclude an athlete from competition, but to help maintain the health and safety of the athlete in training and competition.
Ø The PPE goals:
•Identify correctable problems that may impair the athlete’s ability to perform.
•Help maintain the health and safety of the athlete.
•Assess fitness level for specific sports.
•Educate athletes and parents concerning sports, exercise, injuries, and other health-related issues.

REHABILITATION PHILOSOPHY
In the rehabilitation of an acutely sprained ankle we have to be aware and concerned that we are not just dealing with a musculoskeletal problem, but a neuro-physiological problem as well. The rehabilitation process should begin immediately after injury for many reasons.

& DIAGNOSIS
TREATMENT
PREVENTION
HEAT
CRAMP
Hard work in heat; sweating heavily; imbalance between water & electrolytes
Muscle twitching & cramps, usually after midday; spasms in arms, legs, abdomen
Ingesting large amount of water, mild stretching, & ice massage of affected muscle
Acclimatize athlete properly; provide large quantities of water; increase intake of calcium, sodium, & potassium slightly
HEAT
EXHAUST
Prolonged sweating; inadequate replacement of body fluid losses; diarrhea; intestinal infection
Excessive thirst, dry tongue & mouth; weight loss; fatigue; weakness; in-coordination; mental dullness; small urine volume; slightly elevated body temperature; high serum protein & sodium; reduced swelling
Bed rest in cool room, increase fluid intake to 6-8L/day; sponge with cool water; keep record of body weight; keep fluid balance record; provide semiliquid food until salination is normal
Supply adequate water and other liquids; provide adequate rest & opportunity for cooling

· Lack of stretching
· Lack of proper equipment or facilities
· Lack of knowledge of sport or exercise
· Never engage in sports or exercises without proper instructions
· Never stretch or exercise to the point of pain. If it hurts, stop!
